Abstract

Background: During the third trimester of pregnancy, pregnant women frequently experience various physiological changes that lead to discomfort, including lower back pain, anxiety, and poor sleep quality. These conditions may negatively affect maternal quality of life and readiness for childbirth. Prenatal yoga is a non-pharmacological intervention that combines physical exercise, breathing techniques, and relaxation to help alleviate pregnancy-related discomfort. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of prenatal yoga in improving sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women through a Systematic Literature Review approach. Methods: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review design following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A literature search was conducted using Google Scholar and Open Knowledge Maps databases for articles published between 2021 and 2026. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria, including original research that evaluated the effects of prenatal yoga on sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women. A total of 8 eligible studies were included and analyzed using a narrative synthesis approach. Results: The review findings indicated that most studies employed quasi-experimental and randomized controlled trial designs. Prenatal yoga interventions were generally implemented for 2–8 weeks with a frequency of 2–3 sessions per week. All included studies reported positive effects of prenatal yoga on sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women, as evidenced by reduced Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores, decreased sleep disturbances, and reduced anxiety and physical discomfort during pregnancy. Conclusion: Prenatal yoga is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for improving sleep quality among third-trimester pregnant women and has the potential to be integrated into antenatal care programs to support maternal health and well-being throughout pregnancy.
